He's overpaid even in the context of current MLB salaries, given that I don't think he's one of the top 10 or 15 players in the game. But I think he's the beneficiary of the Jays needing to make a strong decision one way or the other regarding his future. Someone was going to give him that money, so it might as well be Toronto.

Wells happens to be going into the final year of his contract at exactly the right time.

I don't think he is, I KNOW he is. All MLB players are making too much. What's the league minimum, somewhere over $300,000? I'd thank God everyday if my job was to play baseball and I make $300,000 a year on top of that. Just another reason I love my Twins, they're a small market team that plays the right way. They have a few high-priced players, but they'd never waste money like the stupid big market teams do. MLB needs a salary cap more than anything else.

In the sense that lots of players make too much money, yes. But compared to some of the bozos getting the amount of money they're getting for average to less-than-average production, Vernon Wells deserves a huge contract like he has.

He's one of the most underrated players in the game today. I would love to have him on my team.

Welcome to the wonders of Free Agency. If Gil Meche is worth 55 million and Ted Lilly is worth 42 million then for sure Vernon Wells is worth 126 million.
It's nuts and getting nuttier by the minute.

sadly, in 5 years he'll be making above average money for the type of player he is. We are seeing the next spike in player money in the MLB. Pitchers are making so much money that it's going to be hard to have a great pitching staff and a great offensive/defensive team. It'll be fun to see what happens.

I defer to the arguement that everyone has the right to demand/command as much salary as they can. Wells is a good player and works his tail off, he should be rewarded and took advantage of a weak market this year. If he were to be a free agent next year, when the market is going to be loaded with outfielders, he probably wouldnt have been able to cash in...

He will be making over 20 Million a year in the last years of his contract. But consider that they have such a stiff tax rate playing in Canada does lower his salary a few million. Even than I think he is making more than he is worth compared to others in MLB.

Yes and no, it is crazy to think that an athlete will make that much over a few years but that's baseball and if the Blue Jays want to have a chance they have to spend, look what league they are in. If you dont spend the dough-ray-me you dont win and then people dont come and then you dont have dough-ray-me coming in.

Players earn what the market will pay. How does one determine how much is "too much"? So many of them are overpaid, but we fans still pay the high prices for tickets to go see them play. So, they will attract high salaries as long as they fill the seats. Wells is no exception.

Chow!!
