Are you sure it's not Columbo? Was a tv series around from the 60s to present day. You can buy on dvd now. The actor was Peter Falk.

you are thinking of the tv series columbo. it starred peter falk as the detective. the unusual thing was that you saw the murder and watched as the detective solved it. it was part of the nbc movie of the week which was shared with mcloud starring dennis weaver and mcmillan & wife which stared rock hudson. columbo also spawned a series - mrs columbo - you never saw either one on the other show.
