In an older operating system it is according to how you have connected your drives to the computer. IE. Primary Master, Primary Slave, etc.

As the first poster said in Windows XP you can manage drive letters more robustly.

Still you can try the old method of swapping the cable placements. Swap the F drive with the E drive (physically) and see if that does anything in Windows.

Default optical drives are usually assigned by programs installed on your PC ...not by Windows itself.

Each program that uses an optical drive (like a CD burning program) has it's own settings for a "default drive".

If you wish, you may change the drive letters using the " Disk Management " feature in Windows.

- right-click "My Computer"
- choose "Manage"
- select "Disk management"

Swapping the drive letters between E & F should solve your problem.

In windows XP go to start. then right click on my computer and select manage. In the left column, select disk management. Your disks will appear in the right column. Right click on the disk that you want to change the drive letter of and select change drive letter and path. Select the change button. Change the drive letter. Click OK. The computer warns you that changing a drive letter may cause problems. If you are willing to risk this, click okay. Your drive letter has now been changed.
