Some stores have different policies regarding credit card purchases. Depending on how much the card has been used in a day, the card itself may be prompting or requesting this for YOUR safety. I wouldn't read too much into it. I'd rather all my cards require ID.

It depends on the training of the cashier at the particular company; all companies should check id because if they allow a charge that is by someone that is not authorized, but the fine print for most credit card companies stick the you, the credit card hold with up to $50 for unauthorized purchases per store if you don't report the ID theft right away (unless you are paying a monthly fee to the credit card company for a type of insurance that cover this). They don't check it because it is more expedient and the costs of stopping to ID theft, especially it will not be a loss or very small one to their company, outweight the losses from disputes.

It always happens more on the holidays I think. Some stores require their cashier to do it others don't. I even have "See ID" written on the back of my cards and not everyone does. It is just done as a theft deterrent.
P.S. I know it is sometimes inconvient to comply with showing your ID with a purchase, but believe me if your cards are ever stolen, you'll appreciate it alot more. Thats how the thief that took mine was caught.

Some people don't care enough to do their jobs correctly. It doesn't matter to them if someone else is using your credit card. On the back of my credit card, instead of my signature, I wrote "See ID" and they still don't ask for it most of the time.

It depends on the policy of the store, most likely. I would prefer that I get asked every time because that means the cashier/business is looking out for you to make sure that someone else is not using your card.

Be gald when they do. In my experiences, I have found many are lax in asking for ID> Today there are way to many cases of credit card fraud and stolen credit cards.
we all should (even though it seems to irk us) be thankful when a clerk as for id even for a personal check.

Cashiers are supposed to ask for you ID to confirm you are the cardholder. Many do not though, which is scary. Anyone could walk in there with your card and sign the receipt with your name and walk away.
