As a former liberal I can give you some insight. Most liberals feel compassion and care for their fellow man which is a good thing and they think that as long as they feel that way it makes them good people. The problem comes in when their actions and policies actually exacerbate the problem (welfare is a classic example) that they are trying to solve. When others try to point their failures rather than reexamine their methods they instinctively strike back at those doing the criticism as heartless and uncaring once again putting themselves on a higher plane.

A liberal wants what is best for mankind, be it in the present or the future. A liberal tends to RATIONALIZE, rather than jump the gun. A liberal uses KNOWLEDGE and THOUGHT PROCESS to ask themselves, "Is this good for my country? For my world? For human beings?"
Pro-Choice, Anti-War on whatever the war is on, boosting economy, NOT outsourcing jobs to 12 year old who make 13 cents an hour, creating ties with foreign leaders, and hating people from France: Our only true enemy.

I believe that most liberals arrive at their positions not by thought as such but by spasms of inarticulate emotion that they pretend to themselves and to the rest of us constitute thought of a higher order.
