Can we connect two computers and share files using only USB cable or serial link in Windows? I don't want to use infra-red device or network card. What is the detailed procedure for connecting?

Once upon a time it's all we did to share files quickly. In the early days of the net and way before home networking, serial or parallel was the only way.
First of all this will be slow...but it's not a bad thing to try. Using a flash drive will potentially be faster, but if you're asking this question you must be using old hardware.
You can buy special serial and parallel cables to connect two PCs. You may need to get some third party software as well. PCanywhere used to be the standard.
You would install the cable, then install the software on both machines.. It doesn't quite work the same as a network, but it gets the job done.

No, you will need a router. The modems only function is to provide an internet connection, not a network connection. I'm not sure what you mean by "wireless card" on the laptop. Another wireless modem? Or a wireless network card? If its a wireless network card in the laptop, then you will have to get a wireless network card for the desktop also. Then a wireless router to connect the two computers together.

ANother option is a dial up connection bettween the computers! :) I used to transfer files in hyperterminal back then... You can also try out the USB to USB cable. All you need to do is install it on both the machines and you've got yourself a working network connection.

OK, they make a cable with software for connecting two computers from USB port to USB port. You can find it at Wal-Mart, Target, or other stores for less than $30. It works really well for transferring files, etc..

it depends what you wanna share. If it is files, then you are better off buying an external hard drive, but if it is internet, then just buy a ruter that connects two PC's. My one is a 'BT Voyager 220v ADSL' and this is a very good router for sending internet to more than 1 PC.

I've never tried that, but I found a product that says it does that through USB.

yes, you can do that throught serial port.
one of the computers will be guest the second will be as a host.
if you will use it to transfer files, it will be a little bit slow.

you can use serial cables using a direct cable connection... pretty slow though

It's actually surprisingly difficult. Your best bet would be to use an external drive (iPod, flash drive, etc...) to move your files.
