i know exactly what you mean i was sent home from the hospital three times before my daughter was born. and several times on the way to the hospital my contractions would be coming three to five minutes apart and then when we were almost there they would just stop.
she wasn't actually born until three weeks after the first time i was sent home.

Thats the way it works. It wasnt true labor, because true labor is progressive and causes you to efface and dialate and results in broken waters and delivery. False labor just gets you to that point, it works on dialting and effacing.
It could be youre contractions will pick up again in a coupld hours, or it could be a couple weeks. Its normal for labor to stop and your doctor to send you home, so long as your water didnt break.
Just stay active, it will help progress things a lot.

Thats just how labor is. Its not quick by any means. You are technically still in labor. Just not having contractions or dialating right now. Give it to the end of the night. Some women are in labor for days!

Your body is getting you ready for the real deal. Its common to have consistant contractions that just stop when its close to your due date. Its getting your cervix and body ready....thats also what braxton hicks are..practice labor.
The night before I had my daughter mine were coming every 6minutes and then they just stopped. The next morning I woke up and was in labor.

Your body is gearing up. It just means that when active labor does come, it might go quicker because your body did some of the work ahead of time.

It was probably your body taking a practice run. It happens all the time. With my first baby that happened three times before my water broke and I finally had my daughter.

Honey, it happens all the time. No one really knows why. Guess the baby thought that it may want to come yesterday and then changed its mind! :-) Good luck!
