The Hardest Thing - 98 degrees
Lips of an Angel - Hinder...
Yes they follow a theme, i know, as far as i can tell, there is nothing sadder than being in love with someone that you can never have.
There is another called "Love Me" - by an artist called Colin Raye.....I'll post the lyrics ...it'll be easier to understand why its so sad......
I read a note my grandma wrote back in 1923
Grandpa kept it in his coat and he showed it once to me
He said," Boy you might not understand, but a long long time ago
Grandma's daddy didnt like me none, but I loved your grandma so
We had this crazy plan to meet, and run away together
Get married in the first town we came to and live forever
But nailed to the tree where we supposed to meet instead
i found this letter and this is what it said
*If you get there before I do, don't give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through, I don't know how long I'll be here,
But i'm not gonna let you down, Darling wait and see
But between now and then till I see you again
I'll be loving you..love me
I read those words just hours before my grandma passed away
In the doorway of a church where me and grandpa stopped to pray
I know Ive never seen him cry in all my fifteen years
But as he said those words to her
His eyes filled up with tears
If you get there before i do
Dont give up on me
I'll meet you when my chores are through
I dont know how long i'll be here
But im not gonna let you down
Darlin wait and see
And between now and then till I see you again
I'll be loving you... love me
And between now and then till I see you again
I'll be loving you... love me

I think the saddest songs I have ever heard would be
Dont take the girl - by Tim McGraw
and
Independece Day - by Martina McBride
But I have to also agree with Christmas Shoes - I love that song!

For me, both of them are Holiday songs..1.) Dan Fogleberg's
Another Old Lang Syne.."Everyone has experienced the situation of running into an old friend who was once with you during a significant time in your life..Fogleberg does a great job of evoking
sentimental memories of better days gone by.
2.) Faith Hills-Where Are You Christmas..the haunting melody combined with lyrical descriptions of what it's like to deal with
a lack of Christmas Spirit when everybody else around you seems carefree and giddy...another universal experience.

"Another Lonely Christmas", by Prince is a Christmas song where he describes living alone on Christmas as his lover died on Christmas Day years ago.
"Tears in Heaven", by Eric Clapton is a song for his 4 year old son that died after falling from a balcony.
A close 3rd would be "Why" by Annie Lennox and "So Far Away" by Carole King.
I have to be in a really good mood to listen to those songs.

I was going to say that Christmas Shoes song as well. I actually listened to all the words of it yesterday for the first time -- and thought -- sheesh this is a really sad song.
