I was thinking about starting using a daily dewormer because of the deworming sched. at my barn(I posted about that in an earlier question) I've seen the daily dewormers but never paid a whole lot of attention to them. I've started learning about them and think it would be a good idea but I've never used them before.
I'm assuming you still worm with the paste dewormers in addition?

The problem with Daily dewormer is that the parasites get used to the deworming medicine and start to survive it. That's why you should set up a program. The only reason some of the horses at my barn are on daily wormers are because the owners can't pay for insurance and if you buy from a vet and use some monthly dewormers they will possibly pay for surgurys and some other things..... Not sure exactly. And yes if you did try the monthly program they would need to be on a paste dewormer also. Only certain dewormers get rid of certain worms. there are pro's and con's to using a daily wormer. can you give it every day? this is the biggest compliance issue seen with owners. if you can great. next question is, does your horse go out into pasture? if so then you will need to use a paste wormer for tapes. if your horse is soley in his stall then ridden and put away then the daily wormer is great. check to make sure the one you pick gets a broad spectrum of internal parasites. alot of vet's actually prefer the daily dewormers but knowing that owners have compliance issues, that's when the paste comes in. SO with all that info in mind, you have to do what's best for you and your horse. Don't worry about what the barns schedule is, just keep your horse on your schedule. good luck and hope this helps. parasites building up a resistance to dewormers is a MYTH. if this was so, then the paste dewormers would not be working after all these years!!!

The most effective way to worm a horse is by rotating wormers. Each type kills different types of worms....some target tape worms while others target pinworms, threadworms, bots and strongyles. The only way to be sure you are eliminating all potential pests is to switch between brands that have different active ingredients. Parasites can build up a tolerance to daily wormers and you would only be targeting a handful of species by using one. It might be more effective, if you still chose to use a basic daily dewormer, to also buy a paste wormer every 6-8 weeks for tape worms.

We have used a daily dewormer (strongid c) for almost 10 years. The vet recomended it when my horse got sick. It has never failed us sense. That same horse is 25 now, and still going 90 to nothing. We use it on all of our horses, and I highly recomend it! And no you don't have to use the paste anymore. No more remembering to worm, just a scoop of pellets into their feed once daily and they are good to go.

You can use the daily wormer, but remember that worming meds are hard on a horse's system. I have wormed my horses right after I got them and now I only worm them once a year and this is only because of an assurance that they are kept free of worms.

if you keep your horse at a large stable were alot of horses come though talk to our vet about it. the problem is that the worms start to get used to the wormer and can live with it. i like rotaition wormer and worm my horse every 8 weeks. it seems easier to me.
