Retail. 90% of all restaurants fail within the first year

It depends, what type of retail store? is there a need for that business in your area? I would personally be more up for starting a new restaurant , everyone is willing to spend money on food. we pay 50 dollars for two people to eat but we wouldn't spend 50 dollars on a shirt without some serious consideration. Your restaurant would need to have a "kicker" something that gets people to come. If it is just "Joe's Bar and Grill" then, good luck. But if it has some sort of twist, something people arent used to, then you are set. With that being said, people expect a certain type of service when they dine, if that is not met, they will not come back. They wont wait in long lines, they wont tolerate food being cold, prepared wrong, etc. You cant be out of something if it is on the menu.... People will not come back. You will have to employ an outstanding, outgoing, hardworking staff. However if you open some sort of retail store, people are going to come if it is the only place to get something they want/need. If your staff is not the friendliest, or most helpful, people will not be excited to come to your store, they will most definetly get in and out, but they will still buy something. I think personally the restaurant business would be more exciting and more fulfilling but probably more work.
Either way... Good Luck!

Retail, hands down winner.

Grow up in the restaurant industry. Very hard work. For retail you just need people who can work cash registers.

In a bar and grill you need Kitchen Managers, Cooks, Wait Staff, Bartenders, Bouncers, Bus Persons, Dishwashers, Cleaners, Dining room Managers, General Managers and enough staff for at least 2 shifts. headaches headaches headaches !

Probably retail because restraunts don't tend to make it plus you have to worry about all the different codes that you have to follow for a restraunt. Retail you really only have to worry about sales tax and stuff like that.

Probably the retail store....relatively speaking. Either one is going to have a lot of difficult characters for you to deal with, but at least with retail, they won't be drunk and disorderly (JUST disorderly!)...and you won't have to worry about a liquor license.

Best to start the business you would like to do. This is your company you will have to live and work at to get it going. It would be horrible to start something only to turn out it is something you don't like doing.

Much easier to do something you like.
