I am not sure whether you'll find this information useful. Anyways, find out whether any of the letters of the English alphabet has actually taken shape or been called after an ancient Greek or Latin letter. Meanwhile, check the dictionary and then write out the definitions of both. You can include it in the first part of the essay. Now, if you have to distinguish between the both, I can't help you much. All I can say is that both aren't the same(according to the dictionary). A letter is a component or unit of an alphabet. I hope you'll find all this useful.
