The premise is a guy is talking to his kids and telling the story of "how I met your mother". The actual show tells stories about the narraters life before he actually "met their mother" so the show is about young single people.

The premise of the show is about a guy name Ted so many years in the future and he is telling his two kids the story of how he met their mother.

It is a backwards glance and ties the characters together...they use these tie ins to bring people closer. OR it could infer of a relationship that was more of an affair.
