You need to find the run you if you dont know where it is watch where the rats come from and go back to then you will see the holes. Put a piece of drainpipe at the hole so when they come out they run through the pipe put poison in the pipe as soon as one rat dies they leave the run. Do it now they spread like wildfire. Dont put the poison in the run and dispose of the excess carefully. Dont leave it available to any wildlife or domestic pets. The rats can live in garden walls as well as runs.

Call your Environmental Health Department at the council offices-do it now and they might take action this week.
You could ask the rats to leave, or play them a tune on your recoder and lead them up the mountain but thats all a bit risky and I should warn you that the one things rats love better than hanging out in your garden, is snuggling up in your house. They are survivors and breeders.

make sure that you get rid of food sources - only put small amounts of food on a bird table at a time. Decking is a haven for rats so seal any gaps. Get a cat as a pet - rats dont like the small of cats.

You can buy humane rap traps. Be prepared for a horrible squealing though. The problem with that is what do you do with the rat once you've got it? You cannot release it into the wild because it is classed as vermin and this is against the law.
I've had rats on and off - I've stopped feeding the birds and I've asked my neighbour not to throw food scraps on the ground for the birds, either. Speak to your council. They might charge you, though. I've got a Yorkshire terrier who keeps them away, too. I haven't had one for ages, now.

Well I used many methods to get rid of them but the best would be a mouse trap and poison tablets.

Hope this helps you out.

If you don't want to kill them you can get humane traps, and putting poison down is harmful to other wild life, also get advice from your local council if you are in England, as it may not be your fault, they should get pest control out to deal with it, leaving you with nothing to do.
