I think you're refering to a loach of some sort.

Those two are suitable for smallish tanks (30 gallons, no less)

Clown loaches are big (10-15" fish) and should not be kept in aquaria smaller than 100 gallons.
Always get 3 or more, as they are very social fish and need to be in groups.
If your tank is less than 30 gallons, you may have to go for manual removal of snails.

Cichlids will eat snails, but not near in the massive quantities that loaches would.
There are a lot of species of loaches out there and some get so big they are really unsuitable for aquarium life, but there are some species that would do just fine in a 30g or smaller- particularly Yo-yo loaches, zebra loaches, and dwarf loaches.

Instead of adding fish which may or may not overstock your tank, you could do what I do. Get a piece of lettuce and blanch it.(boil on high for 15 minutes) Let it cool then put it in your tank and let it sit overnight. By morning it should be covered with snails and you can just throw it away and no more snails!

Many of the loach family will eat snails.
The most effective IMO is the clown loach. Although the kuhli loach does a pretty good job as well.

Its a clown loach. they will eat small snails and their eggs. the clown loach is actually a botia and other botia's will also eat snails and their eggs. for smaller aquariums the skunk botia is a good choice.

Gold fish will also eat them. I have smaller Goldy's and they do a great job at getting rid of them.

you may never get rid of all of them, but the good thing about snails is that they eat a ton of algae. use the lettuce trick above, it helps.

You will have to get a drop from a pet store to rid your take of these small snails. The only fish that will eat these are Chiclids, and they are agressive fish that absolutly can not mix with others. The drops are completely safe for fish as long as you go by proper dosage, and if you don't treat your tank for these, they will eventually take over your tank. They reproduct by the hundred. (Don't ask me how.) The reason I know this is I use to work in the fish department at a pet store.
