This question is one of the most common question employers ask. However, as I tell my students, the KEY is to successful interviewing lies in understanding what the employer is really testing.

With "tell me about yourself," the employer doesn't really care about your background because they have your resume, but rather they're testing your abillity to speak and organize thoughts.

WHAT you say isn't nearly as important as HOW you say it! So if you want to be successful here, make sure you speak clearly, organize your thoughts logically so things flow nicely from one sentence to another, and end with why YOU are right for that job.

This is probably the most dangerous and most fluffy question in an interview. keep it brief and professional.

for example..I am a hard worker, and really enjoy working in the ___industry. I ma team player, and feel that I can bring value to yruo organization. here are some of my some of my proudest accomplishments.......

I wouldn't offer too much personal stuff unless they specifically ask.
