First, you won't get anywhere without moving that pencil unless you're using a pen! Start at say, the upper left hand corner, MOVE your pencil to the lower right corner, draw up the right side of the square to the upper right corner, draw from there to the lower left corner. One X in a square without lifting the pencil from the paper. But if you don’t want to use the side, you draw a line from upper left corner to the lower right, retrace to center, draw a line to upper right corner, retrace that line to center and on to the lower left corner. If you can’t retrace or use the side lines of the square, well, you got me there!

You could move the paper. What you really mean is how can you draw an x in a box without raising your pencil from the paper or retracing a line.
I don't think this is possible. You can draw a "house" with an X in it, with a pointy roof.

Draw the first / then move the pencil through the | of the square and draw the other \. Now you draw an x without moving or doubling the line.

draw a right triangle, end up at the top, draw line parallel to bottom of triangle. draw another right triangle.done
