I am looking to buy a new boat and want to create an audit sheet as I go out and check the boats.
If you are a boat expert or love boats, then what questions would I need to ask before I buy the boat. Thanks for your help in advanced.!

what you are doing is a survey, not an audit and its a REALLY BIG subject.....imagine asking what do I look for in buying a house...

since everything known to Man is on the net somewhere, type in "boat survey" + "checklist" in your search engine and see what comes up...

...a sailboat? a powerboat? inboard engine outboard engine? use in fresh or salt....how far way form shore? overnight?

since you're buying new:

what is the warranty? what does it cover? What preventative maintenance do I have to do and on what schedule to keep the warranty?

Is the boat built to ABYC ( American Boat and Yacht Council) standards and if not, why not?

There are dozen of question to ask and small stuff to look at.......like, are all wires stranded tinned and all connections shrink wrapped/sealed?

Here's a new problem you can ask about and sound really smart....if gasoline powered, and there are fiberglass internal tanks, are the tanks warranted to stand up to gasohol mixtures? With the addition of alcohol/ethanol to gas recently, there has been aspate of fiberglass TANKS.....not just the fuel lines but the TANKS themselves failing cause the ethanol eats the resin.....

If it's a fiberglass boat with an outboard, the first question I'm asking is "How old is the motor" ? and " Do you have the recipts for changing out the water pump every other year, then I would start inspecting the transome for stress cracks, I would ONLY be looking at a "Boston Whaler", that boat won't sink, thats a mighty great piece of information you start off with, RIGHT THERE !

You need to have a marine survey done before you buy the boat, it is required by the inssurance. Your set of questions is not a survey.
Type of boat?
size of boat?
Use of boat?
year of boat/
horsepower?
make of boat?(you can check on line on make reputation)
model of boat?
Where has the boat been kept during its life(northern boats are worth more, fresh water booats are worth more)
Cost(there is a blue book value to check)
You should try it out.
How does it look as far as passed upkeep?
Are there upkeep records?
Is the engine easily accessible?
Is the berth comfortable for you?
Does it have the amenities that you will need?
Where are you going to keep the boat?
Does it fit into the plans of your partners?( We have known people who planned to retire on a boat but their partner had different ideas.)
Where do you plan to use the boat?
What material do you prefer for hull?
What equipment might come with it that you will need?
What hull shape?
If a sail boat, sail plan, sail sizes, sail types, etc.

Good luck to you

If you buy a New boat you should find the information you need in the owners manual. I did. Ask for the owners manual and read it before you buy. After you read the first one you'll know what to ask the rest of them.

Rocking the boat may spill the potato soup.
