Why refute when you can BURN someone with the HUMILIATION of being given the dreaded INVERTED THUMB GESTURE? Mmm, my ego is glowing with satisfaction already.

I generally only give thumbs down to the best answer if I disagree or find it to be non factual, or utterly abravise and lacking in reasonable content. The reason for this is because I like to see all opinions, even those I don't agree with and giving thumbs down just closes the answer so I can't see it. I will say that I really enjoy it when people give me thumbs down for reasonable answers, it tells me that I definitely struck the right cord in someone.

Nah, I don't play that game. If I disagree with someone I'll come right out and say (type) that I disagree with them and explain exactly why. So many people here talk about freedom of speech and free exchange of opinions to promote conversation and debate, but a debate is supposed to be founded on a logical, cogent argument that supports your position or refutes the other person's position. These hypocrites I speak of criticize people or the government or other organizations through name-calling with no articulated basis for their characterizations. They don't understand that unsubstantiated bashing of anyone or anything makes them look about as intelligent and mature as Pee Wee Herman. So don't give them a thumbs-down; give them a well-thought-out argument against their assertions.

I only give thumbs down to people that respond without much thought or facts in their reply but are simply ranting if someone respond with a view different from mine that has logic and or facts I will never give that person a thumbs down.

I rate answers and questions, and usually refute them, too, unless they're just too stupid and inane to bother with. Then they just get the thumbsdown for being wastes of bandwidth.

This is a game. Whether or not I give a thumbs up or thumbs down in irrelevant in the overall scheme of life. It's just a option that is available to us.

I only give thumbs down to opinions that are completely wrong or totally stupid and rudely nasty.

I only give thumbs down to rude, insensitive responses that degrade a person's race, religion, etc. Or are totally vulgar. Or say inappropriate things to kids who identify their age. Not to differing opinions.

Personally, I find downvoting a waste of time unless you have a good reason. If you don't like an answer, downvote it. If you don't like a question, explain why. You just might be able to sway a couple of people, even shame the asker.
