If I don't know what a person wants or if I do not know the person well, then I buy an American Express gift certificate. It is very nicely wrapped and can be used anywhere.

It depends on for whom it's being bought. If it's my g/f, I'll buy one that she can open in front of family and one that she can open in the bedroom.
Kids? Coal. J/K... whatever they want but I try and direct them to something else and then buy what they wanted. I like to make them think they're NOT getting what they really want and then surprise them.

If nothing else, I make my grandma's (family) famous candy cane oatmeal cookies. I loved them when I was a kid, and I made sure to get the recipe from her when I moved away from home so I could still enjoy them, and now my hubby's family loves them too! :)
