To realize is to simply be aware of something... Understanding is much deeper awareness. For example, I realize that I'm staring at a calculus math problem, but I have no understanding how to solve it.

well i think realize means to understand a fact where as understanding is showing sympathy or insight or ur ability 2 understand !
