my stepson says, or was told that turning the computer off will damage the computer--if it does why is there an off-on button?

Your computer is built to be able to turn off safely. If you use the Shutdown option under the Start menu (assuming you're running Windows), anything running will be safely closed and your computer will turn off without any damage.

Putting your computer in Hibernate saves everything in RAM to the hard drive and restores it when you boot back up.

Technically computers are built to be left on. Turning them on from an off state creates an initial spike in power, more than the standard operating power. Don't worry about it though, doesn't make too much of a difference anyway. And if you think about the electricity bill for keeping a computer on the whole time while your not using it well...if you're going to be picky like that, you may as well save up that extra money from turning the computer off and buy a new one when it breaks.

Well you can always save everything you are doing and close all the programs and then shut down. But it's easier to just leave it on. Although there are problems in leaving it on all the time as well.

It also matters what type of computer: desktop, laptop, mac, pc, etc.
I have a 6 year old custom made pc, and it's survived about 6 viruses and 3 crashes; one where we had to get information from the computer professionally taken from the harddrive because the computer wouldn't turn on. But we turn it off and on regularly, about 4 times a week.

Sorry for the long story, but I hope you see my point?

It does damage the computer, sorry to say. The computer needs to load all the data you just moved around and store it back into it's hard disk. When you "shut down" you literally save everything you were doing into the hard disk. When you turn off the comp via the off button (unless the off button puts the computer into hibernation), you lose the data you were working on. If the system was updating automatically or something and you shut it down, it'll cause serious errors and won't run like before unless you reinstall your OS.

This is like an old-programmers tale. Maybe this was true of older computers and may still be true of modern computers.

Turning on computer equipment can put stress on components as they start up. But with modern electronics this is fairly minimum and the computer components are engineered to last under these stresses for the typical life of the computer.

You can leave your computer on and it should go into suspend mode, but this just turns off most of the components anyway, so what is the difference?

There are lots of silly myths about computers running around, so don't worry about it.

It depends on how much you use the computer. I've always left mine as turning it on and off increases the stresses on individual components and I use it quite a lot. There are other things to consider - sound output and vibration, power consumption. I you will not damage the computer as such but a computer that is constantly being turned on and off may have a slightly shorter life than one that is constantly o. I would imagine that there have been very few conclusive tests!

If you properly shutdown your computer then switch off your machine nothing will be damaged. On the other hand if you simply switch off the computer then it is just like the bus moving off before you got down resulting in you falling on the road. The operating system and the software of your computer would be damaged of course no real hardware damage would be caused and you can format your hard disk and reinstall the operating system and other auxilary software

Good day. Turning of the computer via the switch without shutting it down from the start menu may cause hardware problems initially but doing it all d time, eventually u may encounter a problem but can cause software problems within a few times. Programs that are running on your computer, eg your antivirus has to be shut down correctly in order to start correctly on the next reboot and so to other programs that is why it is key to shut down windows from the start menu so information can be saved. Within windows in the control panel in the power options u can set the switch itself so u can shut down windows correctly. It will be just like clicking start then shut down but instead, if u click the switch, it will do the shutting down process 4 u. Laterz.

No. Its good to turn off your machine when not in use. Turning off your machine doesn't make your system damage. But you should not keep your system turned off for long time. that may lead to some problem. Practically speaking Electronic goods should be used frequently.

If you haven't turned off your system for long time, then unwanted process running in your machine will not be killed. This will lead to slow processing Turn off your machine at least once in a week.

it does not harm the computer to shut it down (the proper way) when you went to go buy it it was off right, the only thing that it does is it will not update automatically or run scheduled tasks although leaving it on does not hurt it either as mine has been on for about three years now
