I suppose it's just a dog thing. I have seen male dogs that didn't lift (not left) a hind leg. Lifting a leg must make their urinary tract flow better, just a guess. I'm a little surprised at the question.

Well, let's see....... if he lifted both hind legs he'd fall down!

It's a male thing.... males mark their territory. By being able to mark higher, they are giving other dogs the image of a larger dog and letting them know there is a male in this area.

Actually, only the males do that. They are preventing the pee from running down their legs. Female dogs squat, and get the same effect.

It's a Territorial thing. The farther the urine sprays, the larger the area the dog can claim as his own. Left overs from the wild days.

Not all male dogs do it all the time. My Wheaten that I lost the end of January would squat every once in a while. And now I have a new Wheaten puppy (5mo. old) and he is still squatting. Puppies always squat, male or female. Usually until they reach sexual maturity for some reason.

Usually only male dogs do it and they do it to mark territory.
Cats mark territory too, just differently.
In fact, I can't think of an animal, domesticated or otherwise, that doesn't mark territory in some purposeful way.

male dogs have there penis pointed towards there head. male cats it points towards the bottom.
dogs lift there leg to prevent urinating on themselves. male cats don't do this as squatting is appropriate due to location.
