I have two female dogs and my boyfriend has a male dog and they act pretty much the same. They're both affectionate, loving, protective, etc. I believe that with some breeds there might be a slight difference between male/female attitude wise and training etc. I don't know if this is true; however, when I was looking into getting a min pin my grandmother who is very familiar with the breed recommended a female over a male because she said they "mind better" and lsiten to you. I went with her opinion.
Honestly they all have the same loving personality and I believe a male can be just as loving as a female and as protective.

From experience and what I hear from breeders..a female can be very affectionate, however they tend to be over protective therefore being aggressive. this may not be the case with your dog. All dogs are different..if you treat them nicely, teach them to be a certain way..you're more likely to get them to become that way. A male dog must be neutered to calm them down..otherwise, they spray all over (marking the territory) and hump everyone and everything. I enjoy females more so than males..but I certainly enjoyed the few male dogs I have had too. You can sign up with an adoption agency and try out dogs. Its all free..they pay (they should pay) for the food and you are not obligated to keep the dog. Check your local shelters for more information.

I have owned many, many dogs in my life, male and female, and, as with humans, it depends largely on the animal itself. An animal raised with affection will generally be a more affectionate animal regardless of gender. However, instinctually, I tend to prefer male pets to female pets -- I tend to think they have more loving and sweet personalities, while females are more intelligent and clever. This isn't a scientific fact or anything, just something that seems to hold true for me personally.

It is said that female dogs are more loyal and more trusting with children, but I doubt that.
It is said that on walks, male dogs stop more times than females, but I doubt that.
It is said that male dogs have more aggressive tendancies than female dogs, again I doubt that.
I do beleive however, that regardless of the gender of your dog, it is better to have them neutered/spayed.
I also beleive that trained properly in all aspects of life, either gender should serve you well and be just as affectionate as the next dog.
BTW, dogs do "do" affection. My male dog LOVES to give hugs.

In my experience female dogs have been more protective and loving. Not to say that male dogs are not, because I have seen ones that are. I think females are just born with a nuturing nature.

Being male or female has nothing to do with the personality.............Females of any species are more affectionate (nature) and SMARTER!

i don't think so. but i think (my opinion) females are more protective because of their maternal instincts. but i also think they're more moody (unless they're spayed of course). but females do seem to have more of a gentle nature if THEY WANT affection. i've only had a couple of females and the rest have all been boys. i found the boys easier to train. they stay focused. and they are rock steady if they think i'm in danger. my last female (a shepherd mix) would show her teeth and growl from behind my legs. i have no doubt that if she felt it neccessary to attack on my behalf she would have. but my boys take alot more inner strength. they seem more likely to attack first and ask questions later. but they're always looking for hugs and attention.
