no.

and the red string thing is a sign of "pop kabbalah" and is distinctly different from the real thing.

real Kabbalah is a form of Jewish mysticism that has been around since around the time the 10 commandments were given to Moses.

the pop kabbalah thing is really a drastically oversimplified, flashy, warped version of the ancient stuff. one could be christian, or muslim, and follow Kabbalistic spirituality.

in fact I suggest looking up whats called "A Course in Miracles" its essentially a christian "take" on Kabbalistic spirituality.

Jesus for example was almost certainly a REAL Kabbalist of the ancient tradition, depending on exactly how you define it. if you look at it that way with a general knowlege of what the real kabbalistic stuff is... it explains quite a few things.

I think the the Rakhi for hindus is related to a specific festival, which is to do with honouring your sister for all she does to help you out during the year. All my hindu friends (none of who are particularly orthodox) are always whining how "I had to buy her an xBox 360, and all I get is a lousy red string thing", boo hoo. They always forget how their poor sis has been picking them up from the pub rolling drunk twice a week all year :). The more strings, the more sisters the guy has (each sister gives a string). As far as I'm aware, the Kabbalah thing is only (or at least best known) in that thing Madonna and Britney do - apparently you send off to the church head office and pay them crazy money for it and all they do is send you a bit of string and tell you it will realign your tree of life. Wish I'd thought of that. And nobody even gives you a ride home when you're drunk.
