Very good question, and there are many good answers to it:
I started with a book called "Robot Builder's Bonanza" by Gordon McComb, and I would suggest that you start there, too. Try to get the second edition if you can, because (in my opinion) the first and third editions are less comprehensive. Another book, slightly more difficult, is "123 Robotics Experiments for the Evil Genius" by Myke Predko. Also, if you want a comprehensive book that focuses on electronics in general, I'd suggest "Practical Electronics for Inventors" by Paul Scherz. A great book on artificial intelligence (which I highly recommend) is "On Intelligence" by Jeff Hawkins. Hope this helps! : )

Though I am not directly answering your question, I thought I would share you with my knowledge on artificial intellegence and robotics.
See there are 5 senses in the human being 1. sense of smell 2. sense of touch, 3. sense of sight, 4. sense of taste and 5 sense of hearing. All these 5 senses are assimilated together and we arrive at a conclusion ( this i coined as sense of thought) . It is these 5 senses we would like to artificially generate and this is known as artificial intellegence. When this artificial intellegence is imparted to a mechanical device to perform certain programmed actions then this device is called the robot. The programing is known as neural networks. Lots of these books are available and to know their names search in the net with keywords , neural networks, robotics, artificial intellegence and you will get what you want. All the best.
