We don't have time to take care of him, between work and school he's not around us all day and is crated.

Wow....where do you live? I would love to have him!
If I were you I would just place an ad in the paper. I am sure that you will be swamped with replies! That is one of the most popular breeds of dogs for any family. Just one thing, what ever you do, DO NOT advertize this dog as "Free to a good home" this will bring animal brokers crawling out from under their rocks. They watch the paper for any dog or cat that says "free to a good home" and then they will go and tell you what ever you want to hear to get the animal. Then they will take the dog or cat to a medical laboratory. This is a hellish existence for any animal, please do NOT let this happen! I can tell that you love your dog and I am sure that you want what is the best for him. You can protect him by just asking for $40 or $50, that way you will only hear from people who are serious and no animal broker will pay that much as they only get about $10 per animal.
I was serious when I said that I would take him. I need to find out where you live tho to know if that is even possible.
Write to me if you will. Maybe together we can figure out what to do.
Take care and good luck.
Lady T~

Like PolarBaby said, Freecycle is a great place to post you Westie. There are also rescue shelters that deal with specific breeds of dogs, and some the deal with pure breeds, and there is also the humane society. You can also place a free ad in most newspapers if you are giving the animal away, or if you are charging less than $100. You may also want to check out petfinder.com to see about what rescue shelters are in your area, and also if anyone has a posting about wanting your specific breed.

ok, i recently had to put one of my westies to sleep because he was very very old and couldn't walk at all, and it was probably the hardest thing i have ever done. it happened in october and i still cry constantly.
the best thing to do is to post up signs at the humane society and at your local vet's offices. Also ask around and try to find someone you know or someone you know will take good care of him. Then try to arrange visits if you still want to see him.
My other westie was abused by a man, so his daughter and wife gave her to me and they visited her for about two months but then they quit coming. Depending on how long you've had him, visiting him might only confuse him making him wonder why you left him. just make sure he's in a good home and it should help with the guilt, but no matter what, you are always going to wonder if you made the right choice, but you obviously care about him so i'm sure you will make the right choice. good luck! :)

You can put an ad in the paper, ask a friend, family member if they are looking for a wonderful pet. I think it is really great that you care enough for the dog to know it would be better for it not to be left in a crate, and being alone all the time. Good job.

Please, please do not give this dog to anyone but the original breeder or a member of West Highland White Terrier Rescue.

Giving your dog to a Westie Rescue group is really the best possible way to make sure he has a long and happy life.

Go here to the National Club's site to let them know you want to re-home him. There is a simple form to fill out and they will put someone in touch with you:
http://www.westieclubamerica.com/rescue/reportawestie.html

Want to know more about them? Here is their Rescue code of conduct:
http://www.westieclubamerica.com/rescue/wrcoc.html

Thumbs up to you for trying to find a good home for him instead of just dumping him at a shelter.

Best wishes.

take him to a westie rescue if you can find one in your area this way they will make sure that your westie goes to a home that is familiar with this breed and will take good care of them. good luck and god bless and happy holidays.

Go to www.akc.org & contact your closest local West Highland White Terrier rescue group. They know & love the breed and work very hard to re-home them in the best environments.

contact the breeder you got him from first. they might be able to recommend a good home.

Finding him a good home that has time for him is what is important. knowing he is in good hands and a caring home will make it easier. DO NOT TAKE HIM TO THE HUMANE SOCIETY. There's enough dogs there already. Be responsible and do what's right for him.

Take him to the humane society where someone could adopt him. or put an ad in the newspaper. But take care of him until you have a new place for him to go!

there is a site called FREECYCLE.com where you can post different things that you want to give away......you could post that you have this dog and give a description......i guarantee you will have alot of different offers cause those are some really beautiful dogs!!!!

all you do is go to that site, pick your state, then pick the town (s) that are closest to you, then post your messege!!!!

Good Luck and don't feel guilty for wanting your dog to have a home where he can get more attention......you are doing the right thing even though it is going to be hard!!!!!
