That we have the right NOT to be offended? Offenses come all the time. How we handle those offenses is what builds character. So when did Americans get the idea that we have the right not to be offended? When did we decide that we'll scream injustice every time someone says something to us that we don't like?

I'm a white christian male, I'm offended all the time! I'm constantly told that I'm racist, sexist, and intolerant simply because of the demographic I'm apart of.

Do you think society has become too sensitive?

Garland, that wasn't a very tolerant answer, I am quite offended. :)

As for being a racist, I'm not - never have been, people tend to label you as such if you disagree with concepts such as affirmative action, or race baiting politicians like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.

just to clearify, I'm not saying we should just go out and purposely hurt feelings. I do believe we need to treat people with respect. However, I feel too many people abuse the term "offended" as if they have a right not to be. Everyone gets offended once in a while, as long as it isn't something extreme (such as racial slurs painted across walls, or beatings do to religious differences, or sexual advances because of gender) then let it go - its part of life.

Oh WELL put!
Society needs to grow up. Quit searching for things to be offended by. Being offended is like a hobby or a status symbol or something.
It's like a bunch of little kids running to tell Mommy that the other kid is breathing on them or staring at them or something, so catering to the whiners became the law of the land.
You can call it sensitive if you like. That's a very nice way to put it.

It isn't that society has become too sensitive but that society is more aware of the avenues they can take to reprimand offenders.
There was a time when an individual's "rights and beliefs" were trampled upon routinely w/o any recourse. There is now a way to remedy this and those who would encroach upon the rights of others in society are now accountable.

Note that you describe yourself as a "white christian male" and not as a "male" thus seperating yourself from all other males. Do you think that only "white males" are Christians?

Perhaps it isn't that others are too sensitive but that you have yet to develop courtesy, consideration, and tolerance for differences.

If you have an opportunity to travel abroad; you will find that this social intolerence is not apparent in European society. If you are "constantly" told that you are racist. Then accept who you are without becoming "too sensitive", society does.

It's all about tact and the world does not have to sit back and take someone's criticisms and rudeness just because it happens to everyone. I do not think that society has become too sensitive. I think it has become relaxed as far as morals and decency are involved. People like you think it's OK to say something knowing it may offend. That's tacky and people with a higher moral ground just wouldn't do such things. In a nutshell, it all boils down the the age old phrase, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

Not judging you and hope you're not offended...
