i just got a one year old dog and i dont know if i should give it a chew toy. i dont want it in the habit of chewing things around my house. will a chew toy encourage this behaviour or will it make it chew only on what i let it (a chew toy) ?

Having a chew toy actually gives them something to chew on instead of table legs, shoes, furniture, etc. Because when they are puppies they need to have something to chew on just like when babies teeth are coming in. Chew toys are actually beneficial to you, the owner! (But enjoyable to them.)

Yes. They need to chew, and better for them to chew a toy instead of your shoes, socks, etc. You will need to make sure you don't leave other things around for them to chew on, because, THEY WILL CHEW. They're just like kids, they are cutting new teeth and the chewing helps them get it done. After they hit about 2 - 2 1/2, they will stop chewing for the most part. Or will only chew their toys instead of the things you leave lying around.

When you come home from work and you find your favorite pair of shoes all chewed up you will find out if your dog needs a chew toy.

From my experience...a dog of any age should have at least one chew toy so that they aren't looking for YOUR things to chew. they must know what is theirs and what isn't. A puppy needs to chew alot because of their teething..an older dog just wants to chew. Depends on the breed. My cocker spaniel never chewed anything..my german shepherd EATS trees, snakes, my socks...since I've always given her toys..she won't chew other things as much.

Yes all dogs need chew toys, it helps them get use to chewing something and will hopefully take away from them chewing on your stuff. Plus its fun to watch the play with the toy.

Well, not all dogs chew toys- only puppies.Puppies have growing teeth and they chew toys to strengthen their teeth. However, I do not know how its behavior changes.Better ask dog-owning experts.

yes they do, it is good for their teeth and it will stop them from chewing up your house. Old cloths can be good, also buy some dog bones the kind that last a few weeks. Don't let him chew up anything that you don't want

Yes - Your dog - and your household - will benefit from chew toys.

Chewing is a natural instinct for dogs...from nuzzling to outright crunching on bones.

Few words of advice: Stay away from anything with foam and plastic. A second natural instinct is to eat what they have chewed. Both of these materials can cause serious intestinal problems.

My recommendations on chew toys are: Bones (duh! - sorry), and items made from NYLA. Any pet store worth its name will carry them.

Dogs naturally chew on things so get it something to chew on or it will be your shoes, etc instead.
