For a premium brand like Benson & Hedges the split of the price is as follows:

Specific tax 2.10
Ad Valorem1.15
VAT 17.5%0.78
Total Tax4.03

Recommended Selling Price5.23

This leaves £1.20 per pack to pay for manufacturing, transport, cash&carry / retail costs and after that is all paid the profit is then split between the manufacturer, the supply chain and the retailer.

You will need a tax specialist to decipher the 3 taxes applied: Ad Valorem, specific and VAT.

The UK government is very anti-smoking so they've banged up the taxes somewhat over the last 10 years to the extent that you will not get much change out of a £10 note. The price is made up mainly of tax and also the mark-up from the shop owner selling you the cigarettes behind the counter. If I were you, I'd buy a few of boxes (of 20) in your (maybe cheaper) homeland and bring with with you. You won't get busted, you'll just save yourself a packet (excuse the pun).

I think it is about 70% goes to the tax man. In Egypt you can buy 200 Marlboro for about £8.00 and their own brand - Cleopatra cigarettes are just 50p per packet! Everbody in this country should be down on their knees in gratitude to the smokers for paying so much into the government coffers!

VAT is 17.5% so it will be 17.5% of the price of the packet of cigarettes.

I have no idea of the prices in other countries but in Europe, it aint that much different since the Euro was brought in. But we are still ripped off in the UK!!
