A real tree is better even if it hasn't got roots. It has been planted to be harvested at Christmas and the growers will plant other trees to replace it.
You have to think of the chemicals and energy used to produce an artificial tree and the transport fuel used to bring it around the world. You might keep it for 20 years but then it will go into a hole in the ground and stay there.
A real tree will rot down and become part of the soil and will benefit insects and other plants in the process.

There are many things to take into consideration. For instance, you have to take into consideration the transportation. I would say that if there is a fake tree imported from, e.g. china, that is probably much worse environmentally than getting a real tree that has been grown in this country. Real trees that have been cut, they can be used as a coastal defence mechanism in some areas. Maufacturing emissions and waste arising from the fake tree production is probably far worse than cutting one tree. But as a previous point was made, the fake tree is kept for years, the chopped real one lasts for a year, so maybe after 20 years they would be balanced.

If your tree is purchased from a controlled and sustainable forest then a real one is more beneficial as it can either be replanted for the following year or you can send it back to the place you purchased it and they break it down and use it as fertilizer.

With millions of people celebrating Xmas, I believe a fake tree is the more environmental friendly. Firstly you have the tree for years and years, can even pass it down to your kids if necessary. But cutting down a new tree every year, making money out of it, just to throw it away two weeks later, seems sinful! Perhaps people should plant a real tree in their gardens, and use that every Xmas!!!

a real one because:
-they look nicer and not so cheap.
-they are more christmassy.
-they can be replanted after christmas.
-yes, they're more expensive, but don't be stingy!
-they can also last more than one year, for example, my christmas tree is serving it's purpose for the second year running!

While a real tree is far more beneficial to the decor of the home, an artificial tree is obviously the most beneficial way to save the environment.
