You can just use some vanilla extract from the kitchen and put a small amount on both cats' noses or a small amount of scented hand cream. After-shave might be overkill and I never spray anything around cats - it can go directly in their lungs

It is partly because the scent of the vet's office is on him, and also partly because cats are very much creatures of habit and any change in routine can upset them terribly. Brutus disappeared for a while and now he smells weird and is acting strange from Luther's point of view, and Luther doesn't know why. Luther just knows that Brutus isn't following routine. As long as Luther hasn't tried to attack Brutus, don't worry too much, just give them both time to adjust.

The same thing happens with my cats. When one returns from the vet clinic, the others sniff and hiss. The poor, innocent "offender" is ostracized....
I think it's because of the smell of the clinic that the others detect. The medicinal odors that linger, smells of the other animals, etc.
They get over it in a day or two, and everything's back to normal.
Hope Brutus recovers nicely, and don't be too hard on Brother Luther. He'll come around!

Yes it's the smell of the vet's office that is upsetting Luther. Take your stinkyest aftershave (any Old Spice?) and give each cat a quick spritzt. this will confuse the issue.
Next time one cat has to go to the vet, say Luther, when you pick him up, take a towel and rub it all over Brutus before you pick Luther up. then when you collect Luther, rub the towel on him, putting Brutus' scent back on Luther.

He smells different. In a few days, when Luther realizes who Brutus is, that will stop.

Because Brutus now smells different, he smells like the Vet office. Luther will calm down when Brutus smells like your home again.
Hope this helps.

I worked at a vet clinic for a long time and we noticed animals hissing (cats ) and barking and growling(dogs) at the other hurt animals. They veternarian used to think that was their way of saying something was wrong. They were expressing their emotions at the other animals.
