A cake is a fruit cake mix which is baked, whereas the pudding contains things like breadcrumbs and suet and is a steamed pudding. Totally different as you'd find out if you ever eat COLD Christmas pudding !

Hi,

in terms of content...very little, as you have observed. However pudding is made much moister and is (or at least should be) steamed, which retains the moisture. Since the advent of the microwave oven that, of course, is open for debate (though not by ME! I'm a traditionalist)

Of course, alcohol content is the start of all the moisture in both. For a purist's 'perfect' cake (or pudding, for that matter) start by laying out the sultanas, raisins, etc. and stick a large needle through every one (Yes-every one!). Yes, it does take ages, but is the only 'perfect' way. Then, with all the fruit laid in a dish, cover with your chosen spirit. I prefer Rum, though others prefer Brandy (Cogñac). Leave to soak at least overnight. Add more spirit until the fruit no longer soaks it up and you have a residue in the dish. Then make your cake. (and drink the residue)

The result will be the moistest, most succulent Christmas cake you've ever tasted. Nothing at all like the American despised 'fruit cake' that seems to be generally despised by all North Americans (except those who make it, presumably)

Making your own is the only way to guarantee yours will be 'perfect', as you make it to your own tastes. The alcohol is not present after baking as it steams out, but the wonderful moisture and the taste will be left. Enjoy,

Cheers,

BobSpain (English, but living in Spain now I'm old)

Traditionally pudding is steamed for hours if its made from scratch.Cake however is baked in cool oven for six hours more or less.pudding is sticky where as cake should be moist not sticky pudding is served after main course but cake tends to be eaten at a buffet rather than at a sit down meal I love both but suffer bad heartburn ha ha

They are made with similar ingredients (although pudding contains suet), but the pudding is steamed for about 8 hours and is very moist, and the cake is baked in the oven.

hi. I easily have never made a Christmas pudding and does not comprehend the place to commence. I easily have consistently performed hand-crafted Christmas muffins yet heavily isn't waiting to this twelve months because of the fact the arthritis is now so undesirable in my neck and shoulders, i won't be able to do the combination required to make great muffins. i'm going to could desire to purchase one; in all probability from Marks and Spencer

i think its kinda the same ingrediants like you say without the marzipan and icing.

I prefer cake as the icing makes it sweeter and also xmas pud seems to have more alcohol content.
