Fighting fires is only one portion of a firefighter's duties. Firefighters are responsible for the care and upkeep of all apparatus and equipment used in fighting fires. All equipment must be in top condition and ready for any type of incident. Firefighters also conduct annual inspections of all commercial, industrial, educational & public assembly occupancies in the city. Firefighters test all fire hydrants in the city, they conduct safety presentations and teach CPR courses to the public.
Firefighters also spend one-third of their lives at the firehouse. This means that they cook, eat, clean & sleep there one out of every three days. It is truly their home away from home.

Where my brother used to work they were on a 24 hour shift. From 9 am to 5 pm they would train, clean equipment, or do other work details if they were not on a call. After 5 pm the day was theirs. They would watch TV, exercise, play pool, sleep, or do whatever at the station while waiting for a call.
