I'm having dinner with my student friends. Since my father happens to visit me at the same time, he will join us. In this case, is he supposed to pay for the dinner?

No, you stick to the arrangement you had about paying in the first place before it was known he was joining as it is incidental that he will be there. He can pay for his own though. You never know your luck - if he can afford it he might just offer to pay it!! Enjoy your dinner.

If you are having the dinner then ... you pay! Your father is just a guest , he did not plan the dinner! How selfish are you anyhow .... he is your father for crying out loud... do not take advantage of him in this nonsense way!

I not only think you should pay for yourself, but why not treat your father as well? Everyone should pay their own way, when the bill comes and your dad goes to pick it up (if he does) just smile and say "nah, this one's on me dad, thanks for coming to visit" He'll appreciate the gesture and it will show how much you've matured. He may or may not let you pay for it, but go with the flow, don't argue with him if he insists.

In this case, whichever of your student friends invited you pays for you. Your father should pay for himself unless there was another extended invitation for him with the understanding that your hosts would pay for him as well.

Unless your Dad has the letters A T M printed on his forehead, don't assume should pay.

Plan on splitting the bill, so if your Dad does offer to pay it will truly be a treat.

PS: you friends should at least cover the gratuity if he does pay.

The grown up of course. What is the point of going out with a grown up if you have to pay the bill, I always say?
Or you could.

No, he should pay for himself and he'll probably insist on paying for you so you're on to a winner anyway - have a nice meal and let your student buds pay for themselves (or go out with their own parents!).

I imagine you should go Dutch and spilt the bill equally. Unless your father has offered in advance to pay it would be rude and potentially embarrassing to expect him to pay. I doubt your friends would be expecting him to either.

No, especially siince it's only a coincidence that he's going to be there. Best thing to do would either be for you to go dutch (have everyone pay for their own meal) or for you to pay for all of theirs but it wouldn't be fair to spring the bill on your dad all of the sudden.
