I would ride Amtrak in a heartbeat. They are far fewer train accidents than there are car accidents. Riding by rail is a whole different experiance that I think everyone should do at least once (if not more) in thier lifetime. I have taken them from Pittsburgh to LA and also a few shorter trips. So yes, I will take Amtrak any chance I get.

In terms of safety Amtrack and other companies that carry large numbers of people at one time, generally have a very good safety record. Flying, for example is often quoted as the safest form of transport.
However set against this is the factor of convenience and the risk of being on a carrier that DOES have an accident.
On a train which, in North America, travels relatively slowly the chance of survival is much higher than during an accident in an airplane. You 'takes your chance'....Here. in Spain the High Speed trains which are slowly being added to the transportation system have so far been without incident and carry passengers very quickly (up to 300Km/h)across long distances.
Reading about Amtrack's record on long distance passenger services it would appear that 'high speed' doesn't come into the equation.
I think the answer is...look at the timetables, the cost and the convenience. If you KNOW a journey is going to take four days, you can set out to enjoy the trip (as I have done while on vacation in the USA) if you are in a hurry for long distances then air travel is probably the best. If you are in a hurry for shorther distances, a couple of hundred miles or so, then private car is probably most convenient.
The choices, though, are all yours. Are you comfortable handing over control to another driver/pilot/engineer, etc. Are you happy with the timing and convenience of public transport services offered for your particular journey? Does the cost fit your budget?
Only you can answer these points.
Whichever you choose, travel safely,
Cheers,
BobSpain

Absolutely, best time is right after an accident because everyone will be very careful after an accident AND you never heard of two in a row (same month/week). Otherwise, go greyhound! However, busses suck, it has the unpleasantness of being crammed onto an airplane coupled with many stops on a trip that lasts forever! I took a bus to Florida and after 5 hours the bus drove past my house a second time! It crossed the state first to pick up more people before heading south!.

I think AmTrack as a long distance commuter train has ended. They may get you on time for short distances or metropolitan hops.....but out of state and long distance...I'd say anything over 200 miles does not make sense to keep operating. It took my daughter to 4 days to go 500 miles. Ridiculas....the problem lies with their sharing the tracks with freight trains and the freights have more right of way than commuters.
It's time to dismantle the ancient form of travel.

You bet I would, when I retire I'm going to take a train from the east coast to Alaska. I hope passenger trains are still running in 15 years!

First of all, it's Amtrak, not Amtrack.
second, once every 6 months compared to cars or planes is still very safe.
