Why are contempt and cynicism exhaulted in our society?

Because we think we know it all. Christians, Islamics and Atheists are all guilty of this. Each group thinks that members of the other groups must be insane. The Christian denominations think the other denominations are all wrong. Islamic Sunnis think Shiites are all wrong, Shiites think Sunnis are all wrong. Atheists think everybody is all wrong.

It might make sense if we concentrated more on living our principles and less on proving that we're more enlightened than everybody else.

I don't think "exulted" is the term I would use. And whether either cynicism or contempt are exulted, or even admired, is questionable at best. People become contemptuous when they learn the truth about something, and that truth is a disappointment. Granted I lost my respect for religion many years ago, but I don't necessarily have contempt for the concept; I reserve my contempt for the cynicism of religion's leaders. Since most of our religious leaders are motivated by lust for power, the acquisition of wealth, the forwarding of ignorance, and will use whatever divisive tactics are necessary to achieve those aims, contempt is all they deserve. I will admit to being a cynic, as I can see little else motivating our society other than unenlightened self-interest and greed. I don't always like feeling that way.

Many are now waking up to the fact that the world is an angrier more hostile place and contempt and cynicism are the fruits of this.

Because most people are very insecure about
themselves on the subconscious level. Don't
hold it against them, most don't know this unless
confronted with a traumatic situation. People lash
out at others because they're mostly unhappy with
themselves. The rarity these days is a silent smiling
person at ease with himself thus at ease with his world.
Not necessarily the world as a whole though.
