is it weird if a guy you like (and think he likes you too) holds out his hand for you to shake during a conversation? does it mean that he wants some sort of contact with you? or is he just being formal? or does he want to feel how my hand feels in his? (haha wishful thinking)and why did he do that?

yeah he wants physical contact... he probably would've liked to hug you but that may have ben a bit forward given the nature of yur relationship? A girl could push a guy away and call him a creep for trying to hug her but holding your hand out for a handshake is pretty safe, she either shakes it or she doesn't
for future referance any time a guy you're interested in offers a handshake, put your hand out palm down, not sideways. That's an invitation for him to kiss the top of your hand. =)

it was an awkward situation and he wanted to have some sort of casual, respectful contact with you...its natural. a friendly hug probly would have been better, but whatever.

Well whatever it is, just shake his hand. It's basic courtesy, and you can get to feel your hand in his. Why not?

its only a handshake for god sake ,
in my opinion handshake is respect and its one of 2 things :
1-he feels like you are his sister
2-he really likes you and he is trying to be calm and gentleman to show you how he respects you.
