MYTH: "Milk is necessary for strong bones."

FACT: McDougall: "Where does a cow or an elephant get the calcium needed to grow its huge bones? From plants, of course. Only plants. … People in Asia and Africa who consume no milk products after they're weaned from their mother's breast grow perfectly healthy skeletons in the normal size for their race. A consistent conclusion published in the scientific literature is clear: Calcium deficiency of dietary origin is unknown in humans. Dairy products contain large amounts of animal proteins. This excess protein removes calcium from the body by way of the kidneys. Knowing the physiological effects on calcium metabolism of eating excess protein explains why societies with the highest intakes of meat and dairy products--the United States, England, Israel, Finland, and Sweden--also show the highest rates of osteoporosis, the disease of bone-thinning."

Are you getting sick when you drink milk? Or do you just not like the taste?

As amazing as it seems to the average North American, some cultures avoid dairy as it is totally unnatural for them. Generally most asians avoid dairy. Then again, if you are getting sick from drinking milk you might be lactose intolerant. If that is the case, stay away from milk and find another source of calcium.

Here's an idea. Instead of letting us tell you what to do, try asking your doctor, or a pharmcist!!

I don't drink milk. I am over 50 and in perfect health. My bone density is fine too. You can get calcium from many other sources. It is perfectly fine for adults not to drink milk. Babies are a different story but they are still growing.

As long as you are getting your calcium from other sources such as other dairy products then the fact that you don't like milk shouldn't be much of an issue. If it is cows milk specifically that you don't like, try goats milk or soya milk. These are acquired tastes (I personally hate soya milk) but apparently these are also high in calcium.

Yep. Full of millions of blood and pus cells. Some people have a serious intolerance and spend their entire life living with allergies that turn out to be dairy-related.

It's one of the worst things you can put in your body. The cows who give us the milk are riddled with disease and injected with a huge amount of hormones.

Do yourself a favour and switch to rice milk, a soya milk (a good brand), oat milk or a nut milk.

Would you go into a field and drink the milk from a cow's teat? No, me neither. It's pretty screwed up that the rest of the world considers another creature's breast milk a fundamental part of its diet.

CALCIUM NOTE

Cow's milk actually leaches calcium from bones. If you want calcium, eat lots of dark green veg.

You do need the calcium to help keep your bones strong especially because you are a woman. Lack of calcium will leave your bones with and when you are older they will break easier and you will have a higher chance of osteoporosis.
If you just cant stand milk because sure you getting it through cheese or yogurt. Also take calcium supplements or even better a multi vitamin with a boost of calcium.

No, but it's not necessary to drink milk.

All mammals produce milk to feed their young, humans included. We consume mother's milk when we're babies. But most mammals stop after they're infants, and go on to eat meat or grass or eucalyptus leaves or whatever. Only humans continue to drink milk and eat cheese and ice cream.

But you don't need to. So long as you're getting vitamins and minerals (like calcium) in other foods, you don't need milk. In fact, large parts of the African and Asian population don't digest milk well after infancy anyway, and they drink much less of it.

It's bad if you don't get your calcium from any other source. You can buy cocolate falvored cubes with calcium in them at stores that will give you enough calcium so you won't have problems.
