I don't think you wasted money on an 7.1 or 8.1 system. Not many people have the money nor the space to have such a system. First off make sure your not in standard mode which will mainly be center speaker. Secondly you should have a menu called SPL (this is separate from the tone test you did). On this menu you can set each speaker to your liking. The speaker will emit a tone while you adjust the level higher or lower. Trust me on this one, you don't want the rear speakers very high at all. When watching a movie it can become a little distracting. Your manual should have some presets to try out too. If you can't find your SPL menu, some companies call it different, then try calling the help line in your manual. Most of the time those guys have heard it all and can be a ton of help.

These are surround speakers and will not produce sound all of the time. It's very subtle. Test using a dvd that has dolbly 5.1. My guess is that they are actually working. Most regular TV sound is produced by the front center speaker.

Like VX said-

It all depends on how the sountrack was recorded. If its a movie then its in 5.1 minimum. CD audio is in 2 channel stereo. High end recievers will use software to emulate a 2 channel source into 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1. They will also emulate dolby digital 5.1 in to 6.1,7.1 or even 8.1 surround. 98% of the DVD movies are writen in 5.1 audio. Some movies are just now getting into 6.1. So wasting money on a 8.1 reciever is idiotic!

Perhaps they are working, the surround speakers are not supposed to have sound going through them constantly but only occasionally.

It sound's like your system is in 2.1 surround. Change it to 5.1
surround and you should be in business. Refer to your owner's
manual for instructions.
