life is to learn

I was brought up to treat people how I would expect to be treated by others. I live my life that way and it has set me up for a fall in every aspect. Human nature doesn't think that way, people see it as a way to take advantage but it's so deeply installed in me that I let people walk over me time and time again. I'm not sure I will teach my children this and it's such a shame because in an ideal world, it would be a lovely philosophy.

Objective reality is my philosophy...We atheists are nothing like what the church leaders are fond of charicaturing us as. We are freethinking individuals who are able to see the Big Picture without the blinders of religion. We do not live in despair, quite the contrary; freethought is incredibly refreshing, liberating, and empowering. We are not nihilists, but lovers of life who see it as all the more precious because there's no eternal afterlife.

We do not need the bribe of heaven or the threat of hell to be good people, we believe in being good for its own sake. Through science and reason, we know more about the true nature of the world we live in than your religion could ever hope to offer.

My quarrel is with irrationality, wishful thinking, superstitions, intellectual dishonesty, and all other forms of thinking that keep mankind mired in darkness, ignorance and hate.

At present stage of human history, when the continued work of the Godly-guidance stands, already, perfected in terms of the long series of prophets and their Scriptures. And__ the Day of Judgement is also at hand. The masses must review, all and all of that, which is being maintained by them; in the name of faith and belief.

The ignorant must pay heed to the Scriptures and the Message of Monotheism, contained therein. Still there is some time for the Repentive Recourse to reform and recognize the actual purpose of life including the actualisation thereof.

Jesus (PBUH) had given this message in his prayer on the cross (The Psalm 22)

“Praise the Lord, you servants of the Lord
Honour the Lord,
You descendants of Jacob
Worship the Lord, you people of Israel.”
(The Psalm 22:23)

It means that praise is meant for the Lord alone. And___ to honour the Lord means to obey the Lord in terms of the Lord’s Commandments and to worship the Lord means to seek help and refuge from the Lord as the Lord is the Omnipotent-Protector alone. And___ that is the sole purpose of human life.

I guess that I could be described as an existential Buddhist.
I do not follow ideas through faith but through understanding my experiences.
If God did not exist, I would still believe in the virtue of human kindness.
I believe to some degree that we can all change our outlook upon life by first understanding our own psychological characteristics by way of meditation and contemplation.
We are our own saviours, when we figure out life for ourselves.

I have found that Max Erhmann's Desiderata is a well founded and easy to follow set of basic guidelines for a good philosophy (not religious) of life. It is important to respect others and have self respect. Tolerance is a virtue as is patience. What is important is that we share this world with others, as we wish to have the right to our beliefs so do they, as we wish to have peace and happiness so do they.
So "Go placidly" and have a good life

A relative of mine had an interesting philosophy:

'Trust no one unless you have seen their death certificate; the only exception being a solicitor who should only be trusted if you have personally driven the stake through his/her heart'

He was a little cynical but very successful.

I would rather be ashes than dust!
I would rather that my spark
should burn out in a brilliant blaze
than it should be stifled by dry-rot.

I would rather be a superb meteor
every atom of me in magnificent glow
than a sleepy and permanent planet.

The function of man is to live
not to exist.
I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them.
I shall use my time.
