My dog does not go to the bathroom in my house or my yard. He will hold it and hold it until he is taken for a walk. I have tried bringing other dogs over to go to the bathroom in my yard, I have brought some of my dogs feces home with me to put in my yard but nothing has worked. There has been about 5 times he has gone pee in the yard and each time I praised him and gave him a treat. He has never gone poo in my yard and half the time wont leave the patio. I need help! I am expecting my first child in the spring and we wont be able to walk him very often after the baby is born.
Background info: my dog is two years old and I adopted him this last July from the humane society. He has seperation anxiety and cant be left alone in the house. He is smart, well behaved but may have spent a lot of time in crates or kennels.

I would try to take him for walks in the yard area where you want him to eliminate. once he does this successfully, then you can reward him with taking a walk out of your yard. My JR did the same thing, and after watch The Dog Whisperer on the NAt'l Geo. channel, I tried this, and now he will eliminate in our yard. Cesar Milan will tell you that you are the "Alpha Dog" and need to mandate what behavior you want out of your dog. By not going any further than your backyard until he eliminates comlpetely, you are telling him that this is where he needs to do his business. Otherwise, walking first, does not show him the need to eliminate first, and he will then eliminate where ever he pleases. If he does not eliminate, after a reasonable amount of time, take him back inside. He will not want to do it inside, and eventually will understand the rules and will do it where you tell him to. It only took my Jack Russell about 2 days to learn this. You have to be consistent, though. Now, he goes out in our backyard just fine.

Okay obviously this dog has been trained not to, as in beating, severe discipline, something that would scare this dog from doing this. He sees the yard as part of the house. What i would do personally is get a second dog, one hopefully already trained, because you can't have a dog pooping in the house with a baby, and who it all the love and attention you can when it goes outside. when your other one does this, even on rare ocasion, try and get it to where it went, show it to him and exasperate your praise.
It's hard to train a dog against someone else's handiwork, and it's not fair to that animal, i know. Just try and change it without treats, and with more love than you have ever given.
Hope this helps....

Hi there !!! I would go to the dog whisperers website, he has a few good books out as well. His name is Cesar Millan, I would look him up. He has a dog show that is awesome.

If he gets along with other dogs, maybe trying to place another dog with him in the yard to see if he gets the idea.

Best of luck on your arrival
good luck with your potty training situation
happy holidays
love light and peace

Dogs will pee to mark the territory in the garden but never ever poo there! If the dog does it is against his instincts and he is extremely desperate! You got a dog- you should take him for walks!!! Otherwise find him a new home!
