If you are at twice the distance you see something's dimension half.
so you can measure how big must a letter be to be seen 15 feet, and the letter 100 times bigger should be seen from 1500 feet.
this is based on geometrical considerations, a triangle having the letter as base and the distance as hight, and considering 2 similar triangles...

If I were towing a banner that I wanted to be seen, I wouldn't want to be at 1500 AGL if I had a choice. In most airspace, you could go MUCH lower, the letters wouldn't have to be as big and it would be much easier to read them.

To be able to read lettering at 1500', lettering should be 36" tall. Bigger would be easier to read. As a font size, it would depend on the font. I don't have Adobe Illustrator here at home, so I can't tell you what the font size would be at 36" for common fonts. Typically large signs like this would be created in Adobe Illustrator with the fonts outlined so you can scale them to any size without losing quality.

Depends upon who is reading it. With my eyesight, it would need to be about 50 feet without my specs.
