Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “The ultimate measure of people is not where they stand in moments of comfort and convenience, but where they stand in time of challenge or controversy.” Do you agree? Offer examples from your experience to illustrate your point of view.

Yes I agree with this and I, for one, think it is a beautiful quote.. that not only applies to African Americans (as it was first intended) but to all people.

You would not feel bad for the millionaire who lost all his money in a stock market crash. That person, who probably never wanted for anything a day in his life, would probably end up homeless on the street because he would not know how to deal with the reality of poverty and hardship.. having never experienced it.
Yet no one feels bad for the single mother whose husband died leaving her with 2 kids to feed and provide for. Who has to figure out a way to work, get to work, get her kids to daycare, put food on the table and keep a place for them to live. That woman, is stronger by all meanings of the word than the millionaire on the hill, living in luxury with everything he wants at his fingertips.

The measure of each of those people lies in how they handle hardship. It's easy to live in the lap of luxury. You don't have to think about anything living in comfort with all the conveniences that life affords you. It's much harder still, to live with challenges.

yes I agree. It is hard to stand alone if necessary or to start a controversy. You will run into resistance and have to back yourself up. I have had this happen to me in a job and looking back I was so much standing alone and was challenged which humans don't like, but I was right and I would do it again.

I absolutely agree.
Also, i think Dr. King's quote is sadly unappreciated nowadays. A personal experience? I would recall that as a church member it was easy to stand up in church and voice my opinion about abortion on demand - i said it was wrong. Then the pastor invited me to join him in a silent protest on the sidewalk next to a busy thoroughfare in the city. He warned us that we would probably be yelled at, possibly flipped off and what not. I decided to go anyway.

what the hell is this, am i in school or something? i thought the semester finished already?
J/k. that is a wonderful quote. that basically means how a person trully is, when tested. I feel like that on occasion., For example, when I think things are going great and nothing bad can happen to me and all of sudden my car stops working while i'm driving. :)

I quite agree. The recent shootings of children in the Amish Community in the United States is a typical example of this quote. Inspite of their pain and suffering they still found it possible to forgive the shooter and showed love to his family. It is quite divine, the stand the Amish community took under the horrific circumstances. Talk about showing love to our enemies! Worthy of emulation and inspiring!

Yeah! you can only know what you are made of when you are in an acid test. I sometimes thought of myself as something big, but some situations made me realize my shortcomings. At other times, I thought of myself as inexperinced or incomptent, but turned out to be a real responsible and dependable person.

It is sort of like the instincts of animals (which humans are)....If you ever seen an animal being cornered and threatened, animals will usually fight their way out!!

When people are in their comfort zone, there is no challenge....When you are out, that is when you will find out about that person, as well as their character.

"He knows not his own strength that hath not met adversity"

yeah its quiet true i really agree with it
look when you give a person all comforts of life any one can become successfull with it
i mean to say that suppose if everything is provided to a person there's no reason to be unhappy so whats great in man's skill that he is happy or he is successfull
but a person of real character and fortitude can live happy and successfull in adversity too
thats what we call bravery, fortitude, success and literally charachter.

Meaning, man is more tested during adversaries. It gauge his stamina and endurance. For instance, I show my talent and ability when pressured or I do not have someone to cling to.
