He might be patriotic, but he is confused.
You love your country enough to die for it.
After you are dead, it doesn't matter if you loved your wife, son, cat, dog, country or whatever. Not to you anyway.. To your wife,son, etc., it will matter.
Would you die defending a loved one? Or would let them get killed so that you can keep loving them because you are still alive?
