i have a nine year old poodle mix. we shower him with attention but he's getting lonley for some canine companionship. what breed of dog gets best along with other dogs? perferably a dog as small or smaller than poodle.

and does gender, age, and size matter? i've noticed he gets along better with female dogs. he gets along with male dogs occasionaly. i don't know about age or size. i've seen him play nicely my aunt's 11 year old yorkie and my friend's 10 month old collie.

i'm currently eyeing an 18 month old lhasa apso mix (female) and a 3 year old poodle mix (male). both at local shelters, but i do want my dog to make the final decision. anyways, any adivice is greatly appreciated.

no, my dog isn't neutered. we couldn't afford it before and now i think he's a bit old to be neutered. but if i do get a second dog, it will be neutered.

The Lhasa apso should do fine. A female poodle would likey do better, unless it is very young.male poodle, and you get him fixed before maturity..(about 18 months)
Pugs, Maltese, Cavalier King charles, or most of the dogs on the toy group should do fine. I wouldn't recommend any of the terriers..
If you don't find the perfect companion in your local shelter, you might check this out> http://search.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?action=1&pet.Animal=Dog&pet.Breed=maltese&pet.Age=Young&pet.Size=&pet.Sex=&location=48615&preview=1&scope=0&x=13&y=9
and just put in your zip code, and enter the breed you want. ..or just enter 'small' ..There are many lovely purebred and mixes..

Before worrying about another dog, make sure YOURS is ready for another dog.
There are some very good suggestions here, but one thing you MUST look at is whether or not your dog is an ALPHA. If your dog is an alpha, he won't take too kindly to ANY dog coming into his house.
An alpha dog can be either male or female. By saying "alpha", I'm talking about the dogs personality. An alpha dog won't be comfortable with anyone putting him/her in a dominating position.
Try this out: Lay your dog on his back. Gently hold a hand to his chest. Do NOT pet or speak to him. Just gently hold him there. If he curls up his tail and averts his eyes, he's an alpha and is CLEARLY uncomfortable with you being over top of him ( a dominant position). If your dog just comfortable lays there, or if he actually looks back up at you (solid eye contact), then you know he's not an alpha, and will get along with pretty much every single other dog in the world.

This is also a GREAT way to select a puppy out of a group too!!!!

By the way, I have a cavalier king charles spaniel myself. An excellent choice for a playmate for a poodle.

First off, i think it's great that you are looking at shelter dogs that really need good homes instead of searching for breeders or designer breeders. Is your dog neutered? Any small dog, socialized properly, would be a great companion. Breed of dog really does not affect how most small dogs socialize, it tends to have more to do with how the dog was socialized as a pup. I also suggest you ask the shelter if maybe you can get your dog and the other two you are interested in together so you can see how they interact.

It depends on how your dog and the new dog personality click or clash. Whatever dog you think you want, make sure you take your dog and do an proper introduction. Keep them both on leashes. Dogs have personalities just like us. I know my dog annoys the heck out of most dogs. She is just super friendly and kinda in your face to them. Don't settle for something you like make sure your dog like them too. Save a lot of issues later down the road. Good luck. I'm in the same boat you are right now.

Its never too late to spay or neuter it just may cost more due to aging problems in the pet.

At nine I doubt your poodle is lonely probably content and the play he gets from the friends is quite adequate for him. Play with them on occassion is a lot different than sharing mommys lap.

usually a dog of the opposite sex would be best as far as getting along but maybe the young poodle would work, why don't you ask if you could bring your dog to the shelter to help you pick out a playmate - most of them have a room or yard you can play in

I would buy the lhasa apso. when buying a compainoin it is best to buy oppisite sex and similar size. I think they will be bestest buds ;) but the best thing to do is take your dog down to the shelter and introduce him to his girlfriend to be. See who he falls in love with.

A Beagle would be a good option - although they are considered a medium size dog breed. Check some out on this page - http://www.dog-obedience-training-review.com/beagle-puppy-training.html

Whippets are also good with other dogs.
