You could have a chest infection, you could have popped a costal cartilage, you could have torn a muscle, you could have a touch of pleurisy or a small pocket of air that's called a bulla or bleb.

Who knows??? You should go to a doctor and get it checked. All of the above are very treatable.

The most likely cause is a muscle cramp or pull. A stitch. Try some potassium tablets or a banana, kiwi, or tomato juice for a quick hit of potassium. If it does not go away it could be a pulled muscle. These are only the most common causes mind you.
You can pull it by coughing hard, moving wrong, lifting weights, any type of movement that causes you to use those muscles, even sleeping on your side with your arm up under your head can cause it.
It hurts like heck and takes a day or two to heal, until then aspirin or Tylenol should do the trick.
It could be a broken rib, but the pain would be pretty severe to the point that you wouldn't be asking what it was. Whenever I have broken a rib there was no doubt. LOL If it doesn't clear in 3 days go see the doc, but they will only tape it to keep it from moving so easily (and breating so deeply).
Good luck, HTH

This might sound like an odd question but is it pain on your rib or around the area, because they are two different things. On your rig suggests a broken or fractured rib, however around the area could suggest broken, bruised, torn tissues, even trapped wind (seriously some people think they are dying when thats all it is!)

call the NHS direct or go to your doctors, at the end of the day the advice we give you is probably nothing you haven't already thought of/tried, and only professional advice and help will really resolve the matter. I doubt its anything life threatening, it does sound like bruised robs, which the doc can't do a lot about, but at least a professional diagnosis will give you piece of mind

I had something like this once. The doctor found the place, pushed into it and said does that hurt? and it did! He said sorry but i had to make sure it was exactly that place. It was some sort of infection but cleared up quickly. Sorry i cant remember what it was. Of course, it might be a number of things and best to see your doctor, but dont worry, doubt if it is anything that a bit of rest etc can't cure. But try and get an appointment before Christmas. Good luck.

I recently had one of "floating" ribs broken. it caused a lot of pain and discomfort in my lower ribcage. And it was very painful when I would try to take a deep breath...the deeper the breath, the worse it hurt...So it sounds to me like you may have a cracked or broken rib....

See a doctor. I had comparable indications various years in the past and it grew to become out to be pneumonia. No coughing, No different ill emotions basically discomfort when I inhaled - no longer even a fever. You sound such as you have an infection of types with the fever however. See a doctor so which you would be able to tell them whats incorrect as a substitute of somebody else attempting to tell a paramedic which you have been conversing one minute and staring at your eyelids the subsequent. pass now.

If not a broken rib, it could be that you were laying down too long on a not very comfy mattrese. Did you lie in extra long at all? Or were you ill and stayed in bed?

Sounds like a broken rib to me.

I've had two of them boxing in the last twelve months alone....

There is not much that can be done for them. See web doctor uk.

Good painkillers, good rest is all you can do.

And don't do anything too strenuous for a few months [like return to boxing like I did].

It only drags it out...
