I have a male Cardinal that keeps flying into my window. It must see its reflection and think it's defending its territory. I have tried closing the curtains, taping up a giant picture of an owl and scaring it away. Still, for the past couple of years, every day it smacks its head into the window over and over again. I don't want to kill it (I'm surprised it hasn't killed itself). Any ideas?

Try taping the owl on the outside of the window, it's possible he can't see it due to reflection, which would account for him attacking the window when your curtains are closed. You can also try hanging some old Cd's on the outside of the window. Don't put a bird feeder near the window as you are likely going to increase the number of birds hitting the window. If all else fails a screen over the window would work. Oh and don't kill it, it's a federally protected species.

Get a recording of a chicken hawk and play it. It'll not only chase away the cardinal, but also pigeons, sparrows, and anything else that fears hawks.

I have heard tapes go off in areas of downtown New York City to chase away birds, and it works.

You can tape a recording, play it over and over for a week or so, and the birds will avoid the window. I know sound tracks are out there, I just don't know where to look.

I don't think black paper would work. That would create more of a mirror-image.

Hang some thing in your window wether it be a sun catcher or a window bird feeder. If you keep your windows clean at all times the birds seem to have a hard time seeing the glass and typically you end up with a bird trying to fly into your house. You can typically put any thing into your window like plants. If the bird sees a reflection of of some thing they will fly away from the window.

We housesit for the CEO of the zoo where I live. His house is HUGE, with a wall of windows, and they live way back in the woods. They were having the same problem, and they did the cutouts of birds on black paper and put them on the windows and it's worked wonderfully.

Where i use to work, we had a lot of windows and from till to time birds would fly right in to them. So we cut out birds out of black paper and stuck them up on the windows. It stopped them from flying in ever again, you dont to cut then out to big or just cut out some shape's from black paper.
I was told it has to be black paper...........

cardinals run into your window because they see their reflection, its a Territorial thing. get some window stickers online or at a pet shop, then they can tell that there is something there and that it is not another bird.try these websites

Maybe you could put a birdhouse with birdfood in a tree near your house. Maybe this will stop him from continuing his flight and when he is done eating he will turn around and go back the way he came.
