The ego is a jealous god and wants it's interests served. The ego is not the root of all evils. The ego is a psychological structure. It has purpose and function. It is that portion of the whole self that deals directly with physical reality. Without it you would not be able to function in the material world. It is not a stepchild of the self. But the ego must not dominate the conscious mind. The egos need much training, I know this. But, never, ever crucify the ego.

Yes, you are right. My temptations are slightly different then yours, but still rooted in self-centred-ness. This is perhaps the greatest evil in our civilisation today. Here is a writing about the "me generation" from an Orthodox Christian standpoint:

Don't expect scientists to agree with you, because for them care for the self is on the contrary the root of all good, of natural (or social) selection, of evolution, and so forth. If you are concerned with arethe (the true purpose of human life), then be concerned with the true philosophy, and read those Fathers of the Church who valued the insights of the philosophers you mention (assuming you are referring to the Greek philosophers).

have you read "the power of now", by eckhart tolle?
he says the mind, and "ego based" self- is not who you really are- and that all pain and suffering come from the belief that you think you are these things. when you are flowing- you are rooted in BEING, or PRESENCE...when you aren't- you are living through the mind, the personality, the ego

It does happen to me.
Anyone who supposes that overcoming ego is an easy task, cannot fully have understood the concept of the ego.
The emotions....the passion that causes action or reaction...is that part of ego?
Letting everything go.....is not an easy task.
How does a person fully let go of their self??

I think what you're referring to is pride. It is truly the beginning of sin and what lead to Lucifer's fall. Compare that to what the bible says about humility. Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

I'm not really sure what you're saying here, but I think I get something of a general idea. I'll tell you though, I have won arguements with statements like:
"I'm smarter than you, I know what I'm talking about, and you are an uneducated idiot who is about to get thrown out of a window if he doesn't learn his place."
It's not a very good way to curry favor, but it certainly does win arguements.
