Can anyone tell me the approximate cost that a new engine should be? I'd like to compare before seeking a mechanic as I'm told they can take advantage of women, and I'm undecided as to whether I should go with a new engine or just get a second hand car later. They've already told me that it requires a new engine. I'm in Australia
Thanks everyone

A Toyota is a very good car, and priced accordingly.
You need a new engine block, not a whole engine. The block is a large casting, with some smaller parts attached to it. You had a piston rod broken in two pieces, one of which pierced the block. Same thing happened to my friend in Dec. 2000, but he had a Jeep.
Now, since engine block is the largest part of the engine, you might need a new engine, but it is not worth it to put a brand new engine, it has to be a used, but good working engine and you need a good friend mechanic to replace the engines, or it will be expensive for the labor.
OK...
I would get a new car if I were you.
Japanese cars, good ones, like Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda are designed and built to last 11 years. You got 13.
How much it should cost for a new engine?
I am in Canada, I think it will be thousands of dollars, maybe 3000 for a brand new.
Try eBay, I guess, maybe.

Get a mechanic to get an engine out of a bone yard, they do come with some sort of guarantee (90 days or so), thats what I did when my wife toasted an engine, they work, if the car is old, a new motor is not worth it, or even a re-built one, sometimes it's better just to get another car, there's plenty of used cars to chooose from, sometimes it just makes more financial sense to dump it. Check the "Book value" on the car, then the price of a used motor, if it's close or if the motor is more than the car is worth, you should think about another car, throwing good money into an old car, is never worth it.

Well a new engine would be the best option. They run around $550 for a used engine plus estalation $450. So your looking $1000 $1500 dollars.

Either way your going to be spending some money on both. An engine can cost more than $1,000 depending on where you get it or type-new or rebuilt. Both should have some kind of warranty to last you for awhile. If you really like the car then keep it but no guarantees on the condition.

well, I purchased a 1994 Toyota corolla for 900 dollars not too long ago. So I wouldn't get in a hurry to spend too much on a car with 200,000 miles on it .

It would help if you told us how old the car is, and what kind of condition we could expect to see a donor engine in.
EDIT: When you get an estimate on here, make sure that it's in AUSTRALIAN dollars.
