I have the same problem every winter. I think it's indoor heating and hot showers that causes it. What ended up doing is I got about a cup of oatmeal and powdered it in the blender. I added it to a warm bath with a capfull (or a squirt) of Skin So Soft oil from Avon. It helped the itching and my skin was a little better. It helped my mom too even thought her skin is nowhere near as ithcy as mine was.

I know, this will sound weird, but right after you get out of the shower and dry off but are still damp rub on olive oil. It will help keep the moisture in and it's good for your skin. Make sure you drink lots of water. If it really bothers you (and it sounds like it does) talk to your doc and have him/her recommend a dermatologist.

You need to start by hydrating your skin from the inside out. You need to really increase your fluid intake. Make sure you are getting 8-10 glasses of water or fruit juice daily ( minimum if you are that dry) You need to lower your caffeine intake since that will dry out skin. dont smoke.
Then, after a week of good hydration, you can add lotions and creams to the outside. Moisturizers do not add moisture to your skin, they hold it in. The best time to apply is after a shower or bath. good luck!

after shower you would like to use toner or filtered water to wash off the tap water. that water contains calcium and chlorine deposits. then, i would use a toner with AHA (alpha hydroxy acids) to enable moisturizer to penetrate into the skin.
I would also get and exfoliating facial asap. flaking means that there is lots of buildup on your skin

Could be Psoriasis. Are the area's red, dry, itchy or painful? Are they on your arms, legs, feet or hands?
You can treat this topically with over the counter meds, but they are much slower to work than those prescribed by a doc.
If you see a dermotologist they can take a skin scraping (completely pain free) and conclusively diagnose this condition and give you a rx for a much stronger med you need to use less often. Me, I say.........see the doc. If you neglect psoriasis......it grows. Tension will agrivate this, injury will, heavy drinking can, You need to take a pro active approach to this issue.
It is inherited, incurable, and chronic.

try mineral oil. my hubby use's it due to him needing to take a shower everyday after work. he got really bad dry flaky skin as you said and that worked wonders for him. or try Eucerin lotion, that works well, and Aveeno lotions work well too. That is if you have not tryed them already. and also maybe try to take oatmeal bath's, they have the little packets in stores.

Sounds like you might have Psoriasis or Eczema if you do...ask your Doctor to give you an injection of Kenalog, one shot in your butt, based on your weight. You can only get this injection once every 3-4 months, but it works great. If it works you'll need to switch sides (of your butt) every time you get it.
